NU President Milliken Makes a House Call

It’s not often the President of University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) makes a home visit. However, The Landing residents were treated to the personal visit of NU President J.B. Milliken at their community recently for a reception, prompting one resident to comment, “This is great getting to hear the University President and not even leaving our homes.”

During his house call at The Landing, President Milliken spoke to 60 residents and employees on a variety of topics including the value of higher education, the increase number of research grants UNL is conducting and the move to the Big 10 Conference. “The Big 10 is the nation’s premier conference and brings with it the opportunity to import the brightest and best students,” said Milliken.

Another topic Milliken talked about during the question and answer forum was the creation of Innovation Campus, a research and development park taking shape on the former State Park grounds. Milliken says Innovation Campus could help the university capitalize on its record-breaking research programs, create high-paying jobs, lure top faculty and students to campus and keep bright young people in the area.

Stuff the Bus

Employees and residents took time out of their packed schedules on October 14 to “Stuff the Bus” and help a Lincoln-area neighbor in need. Members of the employee unity council came up with the idea to cram The Landing’s 22-passenger bus full of food and personal care items and enlisted the support of co-workers, residents and area businesses including the Hy-Vee at Williamsburg. The food store graciously gave permission to park the bus in a prominent spot. Through fliers, smiles and dozens of grocery cart runs, volunteers crammed 2,460 pounds of food and other items into the bus. Things like soup, canned fruits and vegetables, boxed dinners, cereals and personal hygiene products were among the items donated. In addition, the community raised $900. The proceeds benefit the Food Band of Lincoln, a non-profit organization that serves 16 counties in southeast Nebraska.

The Landing Residents are "Living Life"

The Landing at Williamsburg Village residents are “Living Life” as part of National Assisted Living Week September 12-18. Started in 1995, the week is a celebration of the accomplishments and contributions of assisted living residents across the nation. The Landing kicked off the week with a visit by the Southwest Community Band out on the lawn, sing alongs, art talk with local artists, a Kentucky Derby and an ice cream social. The week culminated on Saturday with a Go Big Red! tailgating party compete with UNL Cheerleaders & Lil' Red. The amount of activities planned illustrates that you don’t have to be a rock climber or a marathon runner to live life to its fullest.

Rudy's Message: Don't Stop Dreaming

Immanuel Communities rolled out the red carpet for Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who took the stage recently at Trinity Family Life Center to share his inspirational message of overcoming obstacles, hurdles and setbacks to realize a dream of playing college football for Notre Dame. His story inspired the hit movie that bears his name and gave residents and staff the inspiration to dream dreams.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Sixteen residents and employees at The Landing took center stage for the production of Showtime on the Showboat. The melodrama’s three night run attracted approximately 350 people who watched Captain Lucy’s attempt to open a new theatre season on the River Queen Showboat as it steams down the mighty Mississippi River. She not only must earn enough money to pay her crew and performers, but must also make a payment on the showboat. Along the way, she encounters a villain and sabotage, but in the end love and good wins out. This is the fourth year The Landing has put on a production.

Oktoberfest

The Landing was transformed into German Beer hall for Oktoberfest. Residents dined on traditional German foods including pretzels, bratwurst and sauerkraut. They also danced to polka music. Even staff got in on the fun, wearing traditional green Tyrolean hats and lederhosen
